Specific indicators for Veliko Turnovo

The local authorities together with the citizens of Veliko Turnovo accept the idea for sustainable development and the usefulness of a worked out system of indicators, which can show how the system “environment – man – society” works and what the direction of its development is.

Working out such indicators will become a powerful means used by:

1. Local politicians – they can use the indicators in decision making process concerning the future of their region



2. Businessmen – the indicators will help the decision makers to rationalize the consequences of their decisions on the development of the whole system, and not only in generating profit.

 

3. Local media – the indicators are extremely appropriate for informing. Following the trend the media are have an incessant access to information and participate actively in the process of citizenz participation in local governance.

 

4. Education – these indicators can be used in education as a method for developing orderly thinking and as a research projects model.

 

5. Civil society – the indicators can be used as a source for ideas and successful practices for NGOs

These indicators can show the standard of our life and on that basis we can undertake measures to achieve positive changes. Therefore, developing the indicators defined by Istanbul Declaration, Veliko Turnovo Municipality determined its own specific indicators that correspond most completely to the characteristics of the town:

1. Tourism

• Data collected from the Territorial Bureau of Statistics, Veliko Turnovo

2. Illegal Building

• Sanctioning and legalization act not always in the same year
• Data collected from the Territorial and Settlement Development Division, Veliko Turnovo Municipality

3. Green areas

Green areas in 1998 enlarge with 1.53% of the whole area compared to 1993. We can draw the following conclusions: improved environmentally balanced life style and ensuring better conditions for the health status of the population.
