The population of Veliko Turnovo Municipality
in 1998 decreases with 3233 compared to 1993, the age structure
deteriorates, and the percentage of the population in the
category “Under economically active age” diminishes from
18.9% in 1993 to 15.9% in 1998. This is an alarming trend
because it is the young population that forms the future
workforce. The number of women constantly exceeds that of men.
In 1993 the ratio is 1000 men / 1086 women, while in 1998 it is
1000 men / 1124 women. This trend goes stronger with aging of
population. Concerning the category “Above economically active
age” the ratio is 1000 men / 1633 women in 1998 which is due
to the higher male death rate in this age group.

Birth rate is a main demographic component.
It determines the number of population as well as improving the
age structure. During the last few years the birth rate in the
Municipality and the town goes down. In 1998 the number of
children born alive in the Municipality is decreased with 125
compared to 1993. Concerning the town the figure is 103
children. The birth coefficient diminishes with 1.17 per
thousand. Death rate increases which leads to a negative
population growth and depopulation. In 1998 the number of deaths
is 1230 which is 96 more as compared to 1993. The death
coefficient increased with 1.22 per thousand. Male mortality is
higher than female’s for both years. In 1993 male deaths are
152 more than female deaths, and in 1998 - 84.

Veliko Turnovo population spends on food 54.1% of its income.
Transport and dwelling expenditures increase with 1.2% and 1%
for the surveyed period.

The proportion of the household expenditure
on water supply and sewerage of the total income increase in
1993 from 1.7% to 2.3% in 1998. Electricity expenditures also
increase – from 5.3% in 1993 to 7.3% in 1998.
8. Acute respiratory
diseases death rate
Acute respiratory diseases' death rate marks an increasing
trend owing to the improved profilactic of respiratory diseases
and better healthcare and control. The indexes represent death
rate due to acute infections compared to the common amount of
respiratory diseases.

increase respectively with $0.21 and $0.08, while the average
price of propane-butane diminishes with $0.07.
